Two SOM Projects Honored with AIA California Design Awards

The Moscone Center Expansion and Billie Jean King Main Library have both been honored with Merit Awards as part of the 2020 AIA California Design Awards. Moscone Center also received a Leading Edge award for its design excellence as related to sustainability and resilience.

The Moscone Center Expansion?project included the renovation of Moscone North; a new three-story, structural steel Moscone South building; a pair of elevated pedestrian bridges; and an extension of the subterranean portion of the site.?Located in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood, Moscone Center is the only convention space in the nation to achieve LEED Platinum status and has the lowest carbon footprint per visitor in the world.?

The Billie Jean King Main Library, positioned at the heart of Downtown Long Beach, is a state-of-the-art, structural timber building?that welcomes more than 1,000 daily visitors.?Targeting LEED Platinum certification, the 93,500-square-foot library utilizes timber construction and features rooftop photovoltaic cells, daylighting strategies, controlled air ventilation systems, and extensive glazing with architectural overhangs for solar protection.
